Yet there are still many manufacturing companies that manage their processes through Excel files, loose systems and ad hoc communication.   <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p><strong>But what are ways to better handle all the changes and demands coming your way as a manufacturing company? How do you work toward Operational Excellence? And what role can an ERP solution play in that transformation?  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:700\"><strong>Rick Konings and Nieke Geene, both consultants at Quinso, answer these questions in this blog from their experience. This hinders growth and flexibility. &#8216;We come to companies where production is still planned in Excel, the warehouse works with post-its, and purchasing communicates via its own files,&#8217; Rick says. &#8216;There is no integral insight, let alone overview. Everything is done manually and depends on a few people who still have that overview.&#8217;   <\/p>\n\n<p>That lack of central control can lead in practice to situations such as:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Material shortages not discovered until the start of production<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Orders that conflict with machine capacity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Delays caused by miscommunication between departments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>The result is not only lost productivity, but also missed delivery deadlines, increased operational costs and reduced customer satisfaction. All factors that have a direct impact on profitability and competitiveness. Operational Excellence in these cases is still a long way off.  <\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Insight and integration is becoming increasingly important<\/h4>\n\n<p>In conversations with clients, it becomes clear that the need for insight and control is growing significantly. &#8216;Companies often have data, but it&#8217;s scattered in silos,&#8217; Rick explains. &#8216;What&#8217;s missing is a system that brings it all together &#8211; and that&#8217;s where the ERP solution SAP S\/4HANA comes in.&#8217;  <\/p>\n\n<p>SAP S\/4HANA provides real-time visibility into production, inventory and planning. By centrally controlling processes and linking them to sensors, machines and suppliers, it provides that overview that is so badly needed to operate flexibly in the increasingly complex production environment. <\/p>\n\n<p>&#8216;For purchasers, for example, this means that they no longer have to manually check 100 orders, but can focus content and tactics on the 5 where something is really wrong,&#8217; says Rick. &#8216;We call that management by exception.&#8217; <\/p>\n\n<p>Yet many companies are still far from reaching this point, Niek notes: &#8216;Many companies think they are doing a good job of digitizing, but in practice they still often download Excelletjes from their ERP. That&#8217;s not how we see data-driven work.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Technology in action<\/h4>\n\n<p>What does this mean concretely in practice? A recent customer case from Quinso makes the impact of S\/4HANA tangible. The company was working with multiple legacy systems, Excel schedules and an IT landscape that relied far too heavily on manual maintenance by outside developers. Three FTEs were working full time to keep the system up and running &#8211; purely &#8220;firefighting,&#8221; in other words, not adding value.   <\/p>\n\n<p>&#8216;We replaced the system with a standard solution in the cloud,&#8217; says Niek. &#8216;Now production is monitored in real time through QMES, our own MES system, and we see directly in SAP when a product is completed.&#8217; <\/p>\n\n<p>The result? Within five minutes of production, the customer is informed, including serial numbers. Shipping and invoicing are fully automatic.
